About How to say a word
One page per word. Hear it, spell it, break it into syllables. Built to answer the two questions people Google hundreds of millions of times: “How do you spell ___?” and “How do you say ___?”
How it works
- Audio first. Every word has real US and UK recordings you can play, slow down, and listen, in US + UK accents.
- Syllables, spelled out. We break each word into its spoken syllables so the rhythm is obvious before you read a dictionary.
- Curated pairs. The words people actually mix up — biscuit / cookie, calm / clam, effect / affect — are compared side-by-side.
- Definitions when we're sure. Where a word has a well-known meaning, we include it. If we're not 100% confident, we say so and don't guess.
Our accuracy bar
We publish only what we can stand behind. Word pages appear only for words with a confirmed spelling, a recorded pronunciation, and (where applicable) a definition we've verified. The rest stay on our “coming soon” list — a few thousand words we're still recording, rather than guessing at.
We're a small team. If you find a mistake — a mispronunciation, a wrong syllable split, a definition that doesn't fit — tell us via the email in the footer and we'll fix it within a business day.
What we're building toward
- Free “word of the day” email newsletter (opt-in, one a day).
- MORE accents beyond US and UK.
- A clean “word of the day” widget you can embed on your own site.
This is a living site — the corpus grows as we record more. Check the A–Z for what's live right now.
